The research behind Emberly

Red light therapy — the clinical term is photobiomodulation (PBM) — has been studied extensively for musculoskeletal pain over the past two decades.

What the light actually does

When red (660nm) and near-infrared (850nm) light penetrates tissue, it stimulates mitochondrial activity in cells, boosting ATP production and releasing nitric oxide. This cascade reduces inflammation, promotes tissue repair, and modulates pain signaling — which is why effects are both immediate (reduced stiffness) and cumulative (improved tissue health over time).

What the clinical evidence shows

  • A 2024 review concluded that red light therapy provides robust symptomatic relief for knee osteoarthritis, including meaningful pain and inflammation reduction.
  • Multiple trials report pain score drops of 2+ points on a 10-point scale — the threshold considered clinically meaningful by researchers.
  • An umbrella review found the strongest evidence for PBM in fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis-related disability.
  • Across dozens of trials, virtually no serious adverse events have been reported.

Why it matters for menopause

Joint and muscle pain is the most prevalent symptom of menopause — affecting approximately 65% of women in midlife according to a 2024 meta-analysis of 321 studies involving nearly 500,000 women. Yet menopause marketing has almost entirely ignored this symptom, focusing instead on hot flashes, sleep, and mood. Emberly was built specifically for this gap.
